It is too HOT!
November 8, 2009 at 9:58 pm | In Uncategorized | No CommentsI can’t believe that it so hot! The lowest temperature this week is 35! It is crazy. This week the reception to year 5s are having swimming, they are so lucky. They go in classes and take turns in the pool. I am lucky because at home we have a pool. So after school we can go in the pool and cool down.
Today the boys had SAPSASA softball. It didn’t get canceled. They were playing the game when it was 32 degrees! They were very sweaty at the end of it, but they were happy that they won!
This Friday I have a netball carnival at ETSA Park. It is going to be 35 degrees. So it might be cancelled. I don’t think we will be able to play inside because there are only three courts. I really hope it is not cancelled because I have been looking forward to it. If we do play we will be playing 7 games , and 12 mini quarters. I really hope we can play!
I hope you have found a cool place to sit down and relax this week! Keep cool!
See ya! Rach
Are you helping the environment?
October 20, 2009 at 4:31 am | In Uncategorized | 3 Comments
Last term with Beck we were learning about energy saving and climate change. We researched with Beck for 5 weeks. Then we had a choice of either making a sustaniable living scrap book or a sustainable living house. With the scrap book, we had to make a room on each page and tell why each thing was either good for the environment, or was energy saving. With the house, we had to make it out of wood or cardboard. Then in each room we had to put as many things we could to make the house sustainable living. The thing which I decided to do was the scrap book. It was a lot of fun.
What are you doing to help the environment? Here are a few tips which I learnt from the project. Give them a go at home, and tell your friends about them as well! Then we can all help the environment together!
1.Put in a four minute timer in your shower. This will not waste water…but you can still have a decent wash!
2. Buy tables that are made out of recycled wood. They still looked really good!
3. Ask your mum and dad if you can get chickens. They can eat all of your scraps of food, so you don’t need to put them in the bin.
4. Recycle all of your plastic bottles and cans. Put them in the recycle bin each week, and let then get crushed down, so they can get made into new ones.
Here are some facts about the environment for you as well:
Don’t let the tap run while you brush your teeth. Did you know that more than 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, but less than 1% of it is drinkable?
Do not open and close the fridge too much. A fridge uses almost five times more electricity than a television. Every time you open the fridge door, up to 30% of cold air escapes.
I hope you have learnt more about saving the environment. I know I have learnt more!

Have a go and recycle your plastic bottles and jars!
Holidays are over already!
October 13, 2009 at 2:04 am | In Uncategorized | No CommentsWOW! I can’t believe that the holidays are already over! They went just too quickly! Do you ever have the feeling that 2 weeks feel like 2 days?
My holidays were really great! This is what I did during the holidays.
On Monday morning me and my family packed our bags ready to go to the farm on Monday night. Accept for my sister Hannah who was packing her bags to go to Wirraway (a camp). That night we left the house at about 6:30pm, and drove Hannah to Wirraway. It took a while to get there. Once we got there Hannah found her dorm and unpacked her stuff. Once she did that we headed off to the farm. The farm is called Twin Oaks, it is a really great farm, and the oak trees are really great to climb! Twin Oaks is near Victor Harbour. There are 2 houses at Twin Oaks a big house and a little house. We arrived at Twin Oaks at about 9:00pm, and unloaded all of our stuff into the little house. Then we went ot bed.
On Tuesday morning we woke up had our breakfast, and then went down to the big house. At the big house we had to redo the roof. The people who were there to help were: Kev, Grandpa, Grandma, David, Mike, and my mum’s unkle (who owns Twin Oaks). Today we had to cut the corrugated iron and fit it onto the roof. We had to take the old iron down so that we could put the new iron on. We got half of the roof done. We stayed there until 6:00pm working on the roof. It was very hard work.
On Wednesday we continued the roof we finished all of the sides. After we did all of the sides we had to put the ridge cap on. That took a very long time. We had to do 5 ridge caps. But we only did 4 of them. That was very annoying.
On Thursday we finished the whole roof off! WOO-HOO!! Everyone who helped left at 10:00am, but we went to Granite Island. At Granite Island we walked around the island and then I had a ice cream, at the cafe. It was very yummy. Then we went back to Twin Oaks, packed up and then went home. When we got back home we unpacked all of our stuff, and then had dinner. I had a great time at Twin Oaks.
On Friday at about 10:00am mum and I went to pick up Hannah from Wirraway. When we got to Wirraway hannah had already packed up her stuff and was selling lollies at the canteen. For helping she got a crunchie bar. It looked really nice! Then we drove home. When we got home my sister unpacked, and then had a rest. She slept for the rest of the afternoon.
On Saturday we didn’t do much. I had a really sore throat and big glands. So I couldn’t talk at all. That was very boring, but I played on my DS for most of the time any way. So it wasn’t so bad.
On Sunday my family went to Church. But I stayed home and rested with my sister. We both slept and played on our DS’s. It was pretty fun. When the others got home we had hot chips for lunch. They were very hot and yummy! Then we packed ouur bags, and got ready to go to Twin Oaks tomorrow with our old friends from Naracoorte.
On Monday we loaded our bags into the car and drove to Twin Oaks at about 11:00am. It took us about 1 hour to get there. When we got there we unloaded the car and waited for our friends. They arrived about 10 minutes after us. When they had unpacked I played with Georgia in the big oak tree. We tried to climb to the tippy tippy top. But we couldn’t. That was very annoying! The whole tree is about 30 metres high! Mum doesn’t like us climbing to the top of the oak tree.
On Tuesday we went with our friends to Granite Island. We walked around it and had a coffee at the cafe. I had an ice cream like last time! that was very yummy. Then we went to Basham’s Beach. That beach has lots and lots of shells. For me its heaven! That was great. Then we went home. Georgia and I climbed the tree again. We also put a swing up in the tree. It looked great.
On Wednesday Goergia and I put lots of ropes in the tree so we could get to the top. We nearly got to the top…but we didn’t. So dad took us to ‘Mitre 10′. At ‘Mitre 10′ we bought really big screws, so that we could put them in the tree (like a rock climbing wall) and get to the tippy tippy top! When we got home we put them in the tree with dads help. Then he helped us get to the top. It was fun and scary at the same time!
On Thursday our friends packed up and left. We did the same but we left a little bit after them. Me, Hannah and James climbed to the tippy tippy top of the tree dad took a photo of us in it. We were really high up. It was easyier for me because I did it yesterday. Then w drove back home. When we got home we unpacked and had dinner. I really enjoyed going to Twin Oaks with our old friends!
On Friday we really didn’t do anything. We only did the clothes washing and played games. That was great, but pretty boring.
On Saturday our friend called Nikki came over. Hannah and I played netball with her. Then we all watched Madagascar 2 with her that was very funny. I really enjoyed it.
On Sunday we went to Church. After Church we went to Marion and then we went to the beach. We walked for a very long time. Then we went home. When we got home we had dinner and then watched ‘Wipe out’. I love wipe out, its great!
My holidays were really great! I hoped you enjoyed your holidays as much as me!
What did you do on your holidays?
Were they fun?
See ya! Rachy
Pedal Prix 2009
September 25, 2009 at 5:26 am | In Uncategorized | 4 CommentsLast weekend 16 students from my school went to do the 24hr Pedal Prix race at Murray Bridge. The race started at 12:00pm on Saturday and finished on Sunday.
We were all in groups of four and all had 4 shifts each, and rode for 1 – 2 hours in each shift. My shifts were: 2:00 – 3:00pm, 8:00 – 10:00pm, 4:00 – 6:00pm and 10:00 – 11:00pm. Each rider rode for 15 minutes, and completed 3 laps in that 15 minutes.
When I started at 2:00pm I rode last in my shift. In this shift I only got one ride, but when we ride for 2 hours we get two shots. My fastest lap at Pedal Prix was 4 minutes and 6 seconds. My dad and I were staying in a house down the road from the track. Dad was ment to set the alarm for 3:45am…but he set the alarm for 3:45pm! So we had to rush all the way to the track so we weren’t late! We made it there in there in the end, and we weren’t late!
All up our team completed 265 laps, and came 19th out 71. That is a massive improvement from last year.
I really enjoyed Pedal Prix!

El Shaddai Camp

El Shaddai
This week 3 year 6/7 classes from my school went to camp at El Shaddai. We went there for three days (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday). Each day we had lots of activities to do. All of the activities I did were: Earth Ball, Screen Printing, Orienteering, Initiatives, Rock Climbing, Archery, Giant Swing, Vertical Challenge, Canoeing and Inside Games. I didn’t get to do Fishing or Raft Making because of the weather. There were also free time activities, like…Tarzan Swing, Flying Fox, Trampolines and a platform that moved.
On Monday once we had arrived we had our lunch and recess. Then we got into our groups and started our activities. First I had Screen Printing. You had to spread ink over a template onto the bag, then you took off the template and…it was done! That activity was great fun! The second activity I had was Orienteering. The course went around the camp site. It was very wet, because it had only just finished raining! The third activity I had was Earth Ball. We played heaps of games with the Earth Ball. The first game we played was dodge ball. It was great fun. Then we took the Earth Ball outside and bounced it in the air! It was very hard. The last activity I had was Initiatives. We all had to work together in all of the things we did. after all of the activities we had dinner. It was so yummy! We had meat balls, rice, vegetables. For dessert we had chocolate mousse.
On Tuesday my first activity was Rock Climbing. It was held on the hall. There was 5 Rock Climbing walls. We had to climb the easy walls first, and then we could chose any of the other three. It was great fun. The second activity I had was Archery. We had three normal arrows and a Flu Flu. The Flu Flu was made out of wood and had orange feathers on the end. At the end of the activity we had to try and shoot balloons with our three normal arrows. It was fantastic! The third activity I had was the Giant Swing! Everyone in my group had to have a harness that went over your entire body! Then we all took turns getting pulled up to the top of the swing. The height of the swing was 12 metres high! It was pretty scary at the start, but then it got fun! The last activity I did was the Vertical Challenge. It was held in the hall. We had to start by climbing up a ladder that went all the way up to the roof of the hall. Then we had a challenge boys against girls. We had to get one person to the top of the hall roof by standing on top of crates. It was very wobbly! For dinner we had chicken pasta, and for dessert we had apricot crumble with custard.
On Wednesday it was poring with rain, and the first activity I had was Canoeing! We had to get into partners, grab an oar, and then get a canoe. We went up the Murray River. It took us about 15 minutes to get where we wanted to go. When we got to our destination we all grabbed each others canoe and tipped them from side to side. It was very tricky. Then we went back to shore. The last activities I was meant to have were fishing and raft making. But it was too wet so I did inside activities instead. We did hockey first. We got into partners and versed each other. It was cool. The second thing I did was playing with the parachute. We played lots of games with it. First we placed a ball in the middle of it, and then we flung it up into the air. Next we flew the parachute into the air, and then we put the parachute over our bottoms so it made a tent. The last thing I did was an activity where you put a person in the middle of the parachute. Then you wound it around them, and then you quickly pulled it out and the person in the middle twisted around! It was terrific! For lunch we had a salad roll. It was very tasty.
After all of the activities we packed our bags and put them in the bus, and then drove home. On the way home we watched Tarzan. It was very boring.
I really enjoyed the camp at El Shaddai. I really want to go back there!

Fair Day!
September 6, 2009 at 11:06 pm | In Uncategorized | No CommentsLast Friday my school had a fair! We had heaps of stalls. My class did ‘Hot Dogs’ and ‘Guess the Lollies in a Jar’. We had 2 jars of lollies. We sold heaps of hot dogs and had heaps of guesses for the lollie jar. When Fair Day started it rained and rained, so the little kids had to move inside. We were fine because we were under shelter! Mr Smith won the first jar , and Jesse won the second jar! Fair Day was heaps of fun. My favourite stall was Mr Berry’s. He did whizz fizz, toffee apples and a game called ‘knock them over’.
I love Fair Day!

Skipping!
September 6, 2009 at 10:37 pm | In Uncategorized | No CommentsOver the past few weeks my class has been skipping each day. We have to see how many skips we can do in 1 minute forwards and backwards. My record for forwards is 126 skips, and my record backwards is 96 skips. Then we record our results and find out the average. Our class top average skips or forwards is 96, and backwards for the class is 65. The girls top average skips for forwards is 103 and the boys top average is 88. We also did Yr 7 and Yr 6.
Now to the rest of the term we are trying to learn a new skip which we hadn’t tried before. I am learning around the world with Sophie. It is very tricky! I am also learning how to do the ‘Can Can’ while skipping. That is tricky too.
Have you ever tried skipping and then find out the average?

Robotics
August 12, 2009 at 12:08 am | In Uncategorized | No CommentsOn Monday our class had a Robotics session. We had to get into partners get a robotand find a computer.(My partner was Emma). Then our instructor gave us lots of things to try and do with our robots. We had to program our robotso that it would do what we wanted it to do. My favourite one was the obstacle course. We had to make our robotgo under the chair around the clock and then into the tigers arms. It was heaps of fun!
Have you ever done Robotics before?

Pedal Prix
July 29, 2009 at 12:23 am | In Uncategorized | 1 CommentOn Sunday 16 students from school went to Victoria Park for Pedal Prix. The race went for 9 hours (10:00am-7:00pm). There were 2 groups. The MORNING group and the AFTERNOON group. The MORNING group rode from 10:00am-2:30pm, and the AFTERNOON group rode from 2:30pm-7:00pm. I was in the AFTERNOON group.
The temperature was 14 degrees with showers. That made it harder to ride. When I went riding, it was raining, and mud spluttered all over me! I could not see very well, because the screen was fogged up and covered in dirt!
I had a really great time! I can’t wait until the 24 hour race!
